Images of Desire, is a fringe screening for the 3rd Singapore Short Film Awards

Come peek at the desires of a child’s greatest dream, the search for colour in life, the need for control and escape, and the exploration of love in a hotel and a convenience store. Be tempted by this selection of award-winning Singapore short films as they look at longing and desire in the most curious of places and their often quirky, if not outlandish outcomes.

7 short films produced by local filmmakers will be presented along with a post-screening discussion with the directors.

Wondering what is the ‘F’ word in this showcase of two short films? It can mean ‘Family’ in the short film, Choices, and the ties that bind them. Watch as a son struggles with the mistake of his father and makes a choice that may have serious consequences.

It can mean ‘Friends’ in the short film Durian Complex. Join five people as they deal with the complexities of the relationships between them and find out the connection between the popular fruit and the show.

Or, it can mean ‘Film’, the medium of expression – come discover the meaning of the ‘F’ word with us.

nuSTUDIOS Mini Productions is coming up!  Mini Productions will happen from September 2010 to Mid October 2010. This is your best chance to gain production experience and more knowledge before our real filming begins at the end of the year.  Mini Productions would be a perfect opportunity to learn new stuff and make an impression as crew call for our December productions will be coming up soon!  You will get further hands on with Mini Productions and will have access to our studios to edit your video (on a first come first serve basis).   Your video will also get a chance to be submitted for contests and you stand a chance to win cash (split amongst the group) as well!

Hello everyone!  It’s the time of the year for film school again.  This year, Film School will be held on a Friday night and two Saturdays, the 20th, 21st and 28th August so keep your days free for this event!

Application Criteria for Film School:

Create a 1 minute video using a handphone camera, digital camera, webcam or any other device

Upload your video to YouTube or Facebook, or upload to www.yousendit.com, and send the link to nustudios@gmail.com.

Please include your full name and matric number in the email.

Deadline: 18 August 2010, 11.59pm (Wednesday)

Your video has to address the following questions:

- What is your favourite movie and why do you like it?

- If you are a director, what kind of film genre will you make, and why?

nuSTUDIOS steering committee ’09 will be stepping down in end February 2010 and we are looking for new and fresh members to take up roles for the new steering committee 2010. Do take note that the nomination dates are a few weeks earlier (in January) before the handing over in January 2010, the purpose of this is for a smoother transitioning of committee roles.

c. Interviews: 25th – 29th Jan 2010

d. Mandatory Camp for selected Electees: 5th Feb (PM) to 7th Feb (PM)

nuSTUDIOS will be participating NAF2010, and for our ‘performance’, we will be embarking on a very exciting production, Durian Complex, this coming December! Hence, we are currently looking for members who would like to join the crew. You do not require any prior on set experience, just knowledge of film school basics, diligence and seriousness on set. I assure you that you will be learning a lot no matter what position you take up. Food will be provided during the shoot.

Things you need to know Helming this exciting production would be the directors Shing Kae (SK) and Yishu. Both are very serious and committed about filmmaking and will have lots of experience to share on film production. Fun to be with as well! Those who gone through the previous few Film Camps should know!

Principal Shooting dates are tentatively anywhere between the 8 Dec to 20 Dec and all shooting will be within school premises.

Crew Positions Available:

Synopsis of Durian Complex (approx. 30 minutes)
Living at close proximity can be tough; we follow the lives of 5 occupants of a dormitory. Alvin joins Shane in dishing out pranks after pranks on the fellow occupants but their real target is the composed Melissa, who is always on the search of her mysterious admirer. Alex, the celebrity of the dormitory is the sole occupant who is excused from the pranks but is forced to spend his time with the enigmatic old man with a particular love for durian. Vincent, a new member, is peculiarly odd but seems to know more about his fellow dwellers than he should.

Background of NAF2010
nuSTUDIOS will be participating in NAF2010: Through Asian Lens, happening this February 2010. As you all know, NAF stands for NUS Arts Festival, and it is a major NUS event with quite a lot of coverage and publicity. Here is a little about NAF2009: Arts and the Environment that happened early this year.

Featuring 3 weekends of over 60 exciting festival programmes covering drama, dance, music, literary and visual arts! Open to the public, NAF seeks to further the NUS community’s appreciation of the arts and culture. NAF 2009 focused on arts and the environment and attracted audiences from NUS and beyond.

Unfortunately we did not manage to have a chance to participate in NAF2009, other than a tiny collaboration with NUS Chinese Orchestra for The Song of Kent Ridge.

Criteria:
- You must be passionately interested
- You must be free and in Singapore in December 2009 especially from 8 – 20 Dec
- You must have gone through Film School or Film Camp before
